Justice Yusuf Halilu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sitting at Maitama, Abuja, took the decision on Tuesday to rescind the bail previously granted to Geoffrey Olusegun Akindele, one of the defendants in the trial of former Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, for an alleged N109.5 billion fraud.<\/p>\n
The judge’s action came after Akindele failed to appear in court for the continuation of the trial, marking a significant development in the case.<\/p>\n
Ahmed Idris and Geoffrey Olusegun Akindele, along with Mohammed Kudu Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited, are facing a 14-count charge related to stealing and fraudulent diversion of public funds totaling N109.5 billion.<\/p>\n
The prosecution alleges that the funds, not part of Idris’s remuneration, were used to expedite the payment of 13% derivation to nine oil-producing states in the federation through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, constituting an offense under Section 155 of the Penal Code Act.<\/p>\n
Idris and Akindele, both Technical Assistants to the Accountant-General of the Federation, are accused of committing criminal breach of trust by dishonestly receiving N84,390,000,000 from the Federal Government between February and November 2021.<\/p>\n
