{"id":62990,"date":"2025-03-19T02:48:32","date_gmt":"2025-03-19T02:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=62990"},"modified":"2025-03-19T02:48:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T02:48:32","slug":"state-of-emergency-tinubus-declaration-in-rivers-unnecessary-political-iyc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/03\/19\/state-of-emergency-tinubus-declaration-in-rivers-unnecessary-political-iyc\/","title":{"rendered":"State of Emergency: Tinubu&#8217;s Declaration in Rivers Unnecessary, Political \u2013 IYC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ifeoluwa Odunayo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ijaw Youth Council has strongly opposed President Bola Tinubu&#8217;s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it unnecessary and politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Tuesday, IYC President, Dr Alaye Theophilus, argued that the crisis in Rivers did not warrant such extreme action.<\/p>\n<p>He accused Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of orchestrating the turmoil to weaken Governor Siminalayi Fubara and maintain control over the state.<\/p>\n<p>Theophilus further alleged that the recent attack on the Trans Niger oil pipeline in Ogoni was staged to create justification for the emergency.<\/p>\n<p>While urging Ijaw youths to remain calm, he maintained that Governor Fubara had shown restraint while his opponents continued to provoke tensions.<\/p>\n<p>Echoing the IYC\u2019s stance, the President of the Ijaw National Congress, Prof Benjamin Okaba, described the move as unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>He accused Wike of fueling the crisis, citing his recent visit to Abalama with armed soldiers and gunboats as a show of force.<\/p>\n<p>Okaba warned that if the unfair treatment persists, the Ijaw nation may be forced to reconsider its political alignment within Nigeria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ifeoluwa Odunayo The Ijaw Youth Council has strongly opposed President Bola Tinubu&#8217;s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it unnecessary and politically motivated.
