{"id":62828,"date":"2025-03-15T22:07:03","date_gmt":"2025-03-15T22:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=62828"},"modified":"2025-03-16T05:27:00","modified_gmt":"2025-03-16T05:27:00","slug":"police-crack-down-on-manhole-theft-in-abuja","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/03\/15\/police-crack-down-on-manhole-theft-in-abuja\/","title":{"rendered":"How CP Disu Caught Manhole Thieves in Abuja"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Emmanuel Ogbodo\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismantled a major criminal cartel responsible for stealing manhole covers and vandalizing public infrastructure in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu led the crackdown through \u201cOperation Sweep,\u201d a multi-agency task force launched on January 16, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The operation followed a directive from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to shut down all scrap yards in the territory for two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Raids across Dei Dei, Kabusa, Zuba, Mpape, Jabi, Nyanya, Apo, and Gwarinpa led to the arrest of over 30 suspects, with 16 already charged.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities recovered 115 manhole covers, five motorcycles, and stolen public assets valued at over N1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Disu also mandated that all Pantaker operators register with the Abuja Markets Management Limited, while scavenging remains banned in the city.<\/p>\n<p>In a related sweep, security agents arrested 50 more suspects and recovered 25 additional manhole covers, three vehicles, and other stolen infrastructure across Kabusa, Garki, Mabushi, and Wuse.<\/p>\n<p>The police commissioner reaffirmed a zero-tolerance stance on vandalism and urged residents to safeguard public infrastructure and report suspicious activities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Emmanuel Ogbodo\u00a0 The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismantled a major criminal cartel responsible for stealing manhole covers and vandalizing public infrastructure in Abuja.
