{"id":62806,"date":"2025-03-15T12:35:11","date_gmt":"2025-03-15T12:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=62806"},"modified":"2025-03-15T12:35:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-15T12:35:11","slug":"mechanic-dies-trying-to-save-customers-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/03\/15\/mechanic-dies-trying-to-save-customers-cars\/","title":{"rendered":"Mechanic Dies Trying to Save Customers\u2019 Cars\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Patrick Idowu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A mechanic tragically lost his life while attempting to save customers\u2019 vehicles from a raging fire that erupted under Otedola Bridge in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>The inferno began on Tuesday when a gas-laden tanker keeled over, igniting an explosion that destroyed structures, including a church, a residential house, and a mechanic workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Two people died, while six others sustained injuries.<\/p>\n<p>One of the victims was Rotimi Olaleye, a dedicated automobile mechanic who worked at a repair shop beneath the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Olaleye, a trusted technician of Eagle Online publisher Doyin Oladipo, had been expecting his client\u2019s visit when disaster struck.<\/p>\n<p>Oladipo, his wife, and daughter narrowly escaped the tragedy. They had planned to pick up his wife\u2019s car from Olaleye\u2019s workshop but made a brief stop at a supermarket.<\/p>\n<p>That delay, Oladipo later realized, saved their lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As we approached the mechanic village, we saw a trailer lose control. I immediately turned away,&#8221; he recounted.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Olaleye, determined to protect his customers\u2019 cars, refused to flee despite warnings from his apprentices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I kept calling to tell him to abandon the cars and run, but he never picked up. Then, we heard the explosion.
