{"id":62756,"date":"2025-03-14T10:44:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T10:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=62756"},"modified":"2025-03-14T10:44:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T10:44:13","slug":"nigeria-moves-to-fill-healthcare-gaps-as-u-s-pulls-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/03\/14\/nigeria-moves-to-fill-healthcare-gaps-as-u-s-pulls-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria Moves to Fill Healthcare Gaps as U.S. Pulls Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Adenike Lawal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the U.S. government&#8217;s withdrawal of healthcare funding, Nigeria\u2019s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate, has assured that the federal government is actively working to address the resulting gaps.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during an interactive session with the House Committee on AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria on Thursday, Pate acknowledged the impact of the decision but emphasized that pre-existing government policies and interventions have helped cushion the blow.<\/p>\n<p>He described the funding cut as an opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its healthcare system, reduce dependency on foreign aid, and foster homegrown solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we appreciate past U.S. support, Nigeria must take ownership of its healthcare sector by increasing domestic funding,\u201d Pate stated, noting that external donors have long financed HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria programs in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that a comprehensive analysis involving NACA and other health agencies has been conducted to identify funding gaps and develop alternative financing strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the House Committee on AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, Rep.
