{"id":61870,"date":"2025-02-28T02:17:33","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T02:17:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=61870"},"modified":"2025-02-28T02:17:33","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T02:17:33","slug":"nafdac-demands-death-penalty-for-drug-crimes-seizes-87-truckloads-of-counterfeit-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/02\/28\/nafdac-demands-death-penalty-for-drug-crimes-seizes-87-truckloads-of-counterfeit-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"NAFDAC Demands Death Penalty for Drug Crimes, Seizes 87 Truckloads of Counterfeit Drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ade Iyamoye\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To combat the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard drugs in Nigeria, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has called for life imprisonment and the death penalty for individuals involved in drug counterfeiting and illegal distribution of medical products.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, she urged the National Assembly to incorporate these severe penalties into the amendment of the NAFDAC Act and the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act.<\/p>\n<p>She warned that fake drugs continue to claim innocent lives, including those of children, and stressed that only strict punitive measures can serve as a deterrent.<\/p>\n<p>As part of efforts to rid the country of harmful medical products, NAFDAC has launched a large-scale enforcement operation targeting key drug markets.<\/p>\n<p>The agency\u2019s team has carried out extensive raids in Ariaria and Eziukwu Markets in Aba, Bridge Head Market in Onitsha, and Idumota Drug Market in Lagos, seizing massive quantities of banned, expired, and unregistered drugs.<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing operation, a major initiative under NAFDAC\u2019s National Action Plan (NAP 2.0) for 2023-2027, has so far led to the removal of 87 truckloads of counterfeit medicines and the arrest of over 40 suspects.<\/p>\n<p>Adeyeye revealed that the seized products have been documented and secured in warehouses pending public destruction once the operation is concluded.<\/p>\n<p>She further stated that most premises used by drug sellers in these markets lack proper registration and do not meet the required standards for the storage, sale, and distribution of pharmaceutical products.<\/p>\n<p>In a bid to reform Nigeria\u2019s chaotic drug distribution system, she disclosed that NAFDAC, in partnership with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), plans to relocate all drug markets to six Coordinated Wholesale Centres (CWCs), across the country, with one in each geopolitical zone.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that this move will eliminate unsafe drug handling practices, improve regulation, and restore public confidence in the nation\u2019s pharmaceutical sector.<\/p>\n<p>With the government ramping up its fight against drug counterfeiting, NAFDAC\u2019s recent crackdown signals a zero-tolerance approach to those endangering public health through the sale of fake and substandard medicines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ade Iyamoye\u00a0 To combat the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard drugs in Nigeria, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has called for life imprisonment and the death penalty for individuals involved in drug counterfeiting and illegal distribution of medical products.
