{"id":61852,"date":"2025-02-28T01:31:07","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T01:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=61852"},"modified":"2025-02-28T01:31:07","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T01:31:07","slug":"fg-inaugurates-30-member-council-to-revive-nigerias-fashion-textile-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/02\/28\/fg-inaugurates-30-member-council-to-revive-nigerias-fashion-textile-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"FG Inaugurates 30-Member Council to Revive Nigeria\u2019s Fashion, Textile Industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ade Iyamoye\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a way to revitalise Nigeria\u2019s struggling textile sector, the Federal Government has inaugurated a 30-member Sector Skills Council dedicated to fashion, leatherwork, and accessories.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative, launched in Abuja on Thursday, aims to curb Nigeria\u2019s overreliance on imported textiles and equip young Nigerians with critical industry skills.<\/p>\n<p>Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Bugaje, voiced concerns over the influx of foreign textiles, emphasizing that the council\u2019s creation is a strategic effort to restore the sector\u2019s viability and boost national economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government is committed to restructuring the textile industry by prioritising skill acquisition and local production.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This council will play a crucial role in making the sector self-sufficient and globally competitive,\u201d Bugaje stated.<\/p>\n<p>Bugaje stressed that while the government will regulate and provide direction, the private sector must take the lead in driving sustainable growth.<\/p>\n<p>The council will work under the Nigerian School Qualification Framework to organise training programs aimed at transforming the industry into a major revenue source.<\/p>\n<p>Council Chairperson, Mrs. Funmi Ladipo, called for strong collaboration among members, citing the sector\u2019s potential to generate employment, empower youth, and elevate Nigeria\u2019s position in the global textile market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fashion and textile industry has the capacity to employ millions, bridge skill gaps, and boost local manufacturing. Our mission is to align industry needs with training programs to fully harness this potential,\u201d Ladipo noted.<\/p>\n<p>At the event, Hajiya Hurayya Lawal, wife of the Zamfara State Governor, was named National Patron of the council for her contributions to training young girls in various vocational skills.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Dangote Academy received a certificate of recognition for its support in the skills sub-sector.<\/p>\n<p>With this newly formed council, Nigeria is taking a crucial step towards strengthening its textile industry, reducing dependency on imports, and positioning itself as a formidable player in the global fashion and textile landscape.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ade Iyamoye\u00a0 As a way to revitalise Nigeria\u2019s struggling textile sector, the Federal Government has inaugurated a 30-member Sector Skills Council dedicated to fashion, leatherwork, and accessories.
