{"id":61820,"date":"2025-02-27T03:26:59","date_gmt":"2025-02-27T03:26:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=61820"},"modified":"2025-02-27T03:26:59","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T03:26:59","slug":"foreign-fraud-syndicates-recruiting-nigerians-into-cybercrime-efcc-boss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/02\/27\/foreign-fraud-syndicates-recruiting-nigerians-into-cybercrime-efcc-boss\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign Fraud Syndicates Recruiting Nigerians into Cybercrime -EFCC Boss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ade Iyamoye\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has raised the alarm over foreign fraud syndicates infiltrating Nigeria and recruiting young Nigerians into cybercrime, including cryptocurrency scams.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Abuja while receiving participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC 18), from the National Institute for Security Studies, Olukoyede revealed that Nigeria is becoming a hub for international cybercriminals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Organized foreign fraud networks are establishing cells in Nigerian cities and luring young people into serious cybercrimes,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He further disclosed that cryptocurrency is increasingly being used to fund illegal activities, including arms smuggling.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent EFCC operation in Lagos, 194 foreign nationals\u2014among them Chinese, Filipinos, Eastern Europeans, and Tunisians\u2014were arrested in a single building on Victoria Island.<\/p>\n<p>Many had no valid visas, and most of their financial dealings were cryptocurrency-based.<\/p>\n<p>Olukoyede also warned that some of these foreigners are ex-convicts who fled their home countries and are expanding criminal operations across Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Calling for urgent national and continental action, he urged security agencies to collaborate in tackling cybercrime, money laundering, and terrorism financing.<\/p>\n<p>Representing the National Institute for Security Studies, Commandant Joseph Odama praised the EFCC\u2019s efforts in exposing financial networks that fund insurgency and instability in Nigeria and beyond.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ade Iyamoye\u00a0 The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has raised the alarm over foreign fraud syndicates infiltrating Nigeria and recruiting young Nigerians into cybercrime, including cryptocurrency scams.
