{"id":61654,"date":"2025-02-21T15:46:28","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T15:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=61654"},"modified":"2025-02-21T15:46:28","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T15:46:28","slug":"tinubu-approves-relocation-of-29-prisons-from-urban-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/02\/21\/tinubu-approves-relocation-of-29-prisons-from-urban-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinubu Approves Relocation of 29 Prisons from Urban Areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ifeoluwa Odunayo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu has approved the relocation of 29 correctional centres from urban areas across the country, fulfilling a commitment made by the Federal Government last year.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the approval on Friday during the unveiling of operational vehicles for the Nigerian Correctional Service.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2024, Tunji-Ojo had disclosed the government\u2019s plan to relocate correctional centres due to the security risks posed by their presence in densely populated urban locations.<\/p>\n<p>Facilities in Ikoyi, Apapa, Agodi, Enugu, and Suleja were identified among those slated for relocation.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the minister warned that prisons located near residential and commercial areas heightened security threats.<\/p>\n<p>He specifically highlighted that a jailbreak in Ikoyi could have severe consequences for Lagos and damage Nigeria\u2019s international reputation.<\/p>\n<p>Following a comprehensive audit of the country\u2019s 256 correctional centres, the government determined that at least 29 facilities required urgent relocation.<\/p>\n<p>More details to follow soon&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ifeoluwa Odunayo President Bola Tinubu has approved the relocation of 29 correctional centres from urban areas across the country, fulfilling a commitment made by the Federal Government last year.
