{"id":61020,"date":"2025-02-11T10:00:01","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T10:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=61020"},"modified":"2025-02-11T10:00:01","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T10:00:01","slug":"residents-raise-alarm-over-money-doublers-scam-in-gwagwalada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/02\/11\/residents-raise-alarm-over-money-doublers-scam-in-gwagwalada\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents Raise Alarm Over \u2018Money Doublers\u2019 Scam in Gwagwalada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Emmanuel Ogbodo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Residents of Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have expressed growing concerns over the activities of suspected fraudsters posing as \u201cmoney doublers\u201d in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The group, often dressed in black suits to appear professional, lures unsuspecting victims with promises of multiplying their money in exchange for registration fees.<\/p>\n<p>They are frequently spotted around Radio House, Old and New Kutunku, and the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, using persuasive tactics and laptops to convince people to invest.<\/p>\n<p>According to residents, the group rents apartments in the area, with over 20 members living together and operating daily.<\/p>\n<p>Suleiman Ibrahim, a resident of New Kutunku, described their strategy: \u201cThey move around like bankers, using laptops to register people and promise to double their money within days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another resident, Muazu Ishaq, noted that the group, mostly young men aged 22 to 25, often prays at local mosques before resuming their activities.<\/p>\n<p>Several individuals have fallen victim to the scam. Mrs. Gladys Danjuma, a resident of New Kutunku, revealed that two of her neighbors lost \u20a6170,000 each after being deceived with promises of quick returns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey use charms to manipulate people,\u201d she alleged.<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement has begun cracking down on the syndicate.<\/p>\n<p>In late January 2025, police operatives arrested six members during a raid in Gwagwalada.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 7, Benneth Igweh, confirmed the arrests, stating that a laptop and mercury were recovered from the suspects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey tricked victims into handing over money with false promises of doubling it.
