Members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have successfully shut down operations at the Tin-can Island Port in Apapa, Lagos, in solidarity with the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).<\/p>\n
This move follows the directives from the NLC after its national executive council meeting on Monday, instructing all affiliated unions to strictly adhere to the industrial action. The joint decision by the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) was prompted by alleged violations of workers’ rights, the assault on NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, and the government’s continuous refusal to implement agreements, address non-payment of backlog salaries and pensions, address discriminatory salary payments, and comply with the national minimum wage.<\/p>\n
Executive members of MWUN directed their members to close down the ports on Tuesday morning in line with the national directive. Freight forwarders who arrived at the port prepared to clear their goods were instructed to return home.<\/p>\n
Clearing agents expressed their understanding of the strike’s significance but voiced concerns about the potential repercussions for the masses. Seun Adigun, a clearing agent at the Tin-Can Island port, emphasized that the accumulated demurrage during the closure would likely be transferred to the public eventually.<\/p>\n
He noted, “No matter how long the seaport remains closed, government revenue still remains and would be collected.
