{"id":59643,"date":"2025-01-16T02:36:12","date_gmt":"2025-01-16T02:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=59643"},"modified":"2025-01-16T02:36:12","modified_gmt":"2025-01-16T02:36:12","slug":"three-siblings-sentenced-to-death-for-murder-in-niger-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/01\/16\/three-siblings-sentenced-to-death-for-murder-in-niger-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Siblings Sentenced to Death for Murder in Niger State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Our Correspondent\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Minna High Court has sentenced three siblings to death for the murder of Hafsat Aliyu, a co-wife in a polygamous home.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Balkisu Gambo Yusuf of State High Court 7 convicted Amina Aliyu, Aishat Mohammed, and Zainab Aliyu for jointly committing the crime on March 23, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The court found that Amina struck Hafsat with a pestle before setting her body on fire in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>After a three-year trial, the siblings were found guilty of joint act and culpable homicide under Sections 97 and 221 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n<p>While Amina and Aishat were sentenced to death by electrocution, the court commuted Zainab\u2019s sentence to life imprisonment, as she was a minor at the time of the crime.<\/p>\n<p>The judge upheld the prosecution\u2019s evidence, stating that the crime warranted the maximum penalty. Defense counsel Peter Omale had pleaded for leniency, citing Zainab\u2019s age, which led to her exemption from the death penalty under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).<\/p>\n<p>Pronouncing the verdict, Justice Yusuf said, \u201cAmina and Aishat Aliyu are sentenced to death by electrocution.
