{"id":59101,"date":"2025-01-07T10:43:27","date_gmt":"2025-01-07T10:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=59101"},"modified":"2025-01-07T10:43:27","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T10:43:27","slug":"nigerians-slam-aedc-tcn-as-two-week-blackout-hits-abuja-nasarawa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/01\/07\/nigerians-slam-aedc-tcn-as-two-week-blackout-hits-abuja-nasarawa\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerians Slam AEDC, TCN as Two-Week Blackout Hits Abuja, Nasarawa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Emmanuel Ogbodo<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Residents and businesses in Abuja and Nasarawa have decried the prolonged power outage that has left large parts of both regions in darkness for two weeks, following an announcement by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).<\/p>\n<p>The blackout, which began on January 6, 2025, has caused significant economic losses running into billions of naira.<\/p>\n<p>AEDC attributed the outage to the relocation of the 33KV DC Airport Feeder and 132KV Kukwaba-Apo Transmission Line Towers along the Outer Southern Motorway, while TCN cited the need for power rationing.<\/p>\n<p>Areas affected include Kapwa, NNPC, Games Village, National Stadium, Eye Clinic, Indoor Complex, Christ Embassy Church, American International School, Spring Court, American Embassy Quarters, EFCC HQ, Coca-Cola, Railway, and FMC, as well as parts of Apo, Gudu, Gbazango, Kubwa, Bwari, Jahi, Jabi, Karu, Nyanya, Mararaba, and Keffi. However, reports indicate that areas like Utako, Dawaki, and Dutse, which were not listed, are also without power.<\/p>\n<p>Frustrated residents have condemned the situation. Kubwa resident Mabel Michael lamented, &#8220;How do we cope, especially with perishables? AEDC is irresponsible.&#8221; Trader Benjamin Eze decried the high cost of fuel for generators, saying, &#8220;It&#8217;s disgraceful that such outages still happen in Nigeria. There should be alternatives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kunle Olubiyo, President of the Nigerian Consumer Protection Network, criticized AEDC and TCN for poor planning, stating, &#8220;There should have been proper stringing before relocation. People must be held accountable for this negligence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the backlash, AEDC\u2019s Acting Managing Director, Chijioke Okwuokenye, assured residents that remedial measures were in place, saying, &#8220;We have implemented load-shedding to prevent total blackout. There is no intention to keep customers in darkness for 14 days.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged the financial impact, stating, &#8220;We anticipate revenue losses due to reduced energy usage.
