The heat was unbearable, and we couldn\u2019t save anything. This has ruined our plans to expand our business and sustain our families.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another affected trader criticized the delayed response of firefighters, who reportedly arrived at 2:00 a.m., hours after the fire had caused extensive damage.<\/p>\n<p>He attributed the scale of the disaster to the lack of functional fire service stations in Karu, urging the government to deploy well-equipped teams to markets statewide.<\/p>\n<p>The Director of the Nasarawa State Fire Service, Builder Ombogus-Joshua, confirmed the incident but cited a vehicle breakdown as the cause of the delayed response.<\/p>\n<p>He assured the public that investigations were underway to determine the number of shops affected and the fire&#8217;s cause.<\/p>\n<p>This tragedy follows a similar incident on December 5, 2024, at Lafia\u2019s Modern Market, where over 30 shops were destroyed in a fire.<\/p>\n<p>In light of recurring market fires, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly recently passed a bill to establish the Nasarawa State Fire and Rescue Service Agency.<\/p>\n<p>The Speaker, Danladi Jatau, stated that the agency would enhance fire response capabilities through better equipment and personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Traders are now appealing to the government, NGOs, and well-meaning individuals for urgent assistance to rebuild their livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Cynthia Abah A devastating fire engulfed Masaka Market in Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, late Friday night, destroying goods worth millions of naira.
