{"id":58362,"date":"2024-12-23T16:15:53","date_gmt":"2024-12-23T16:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=58362"},"modified":"2024-12-23T16:15:53","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T16:15:53","slug":"withdraw-tax-reform-bills-amid-economic-strain-ndume-urges-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/12\/23\/withdraw-tax-reform-bills-amid-economic-strain-ndume-urges-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Withdraw Tax Reform Bills Amid Economic Strain, Ndume Urges FG\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Adenike Lawal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Ali Ndume, has called on the Federal Government (FG), to withdraw the proposed tax reform bills under consideration in the National Assembly, citing the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that implementing these measures now could worsen the financial burden on citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Ndume emphasized the need for extensive consultations with stakeholders, including state and local governments and the private sector, before introducing new tax laws.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), to focus on expanding its tax base and improving collection efficiency while ensuring accountability and transparency in tax administration.<\/p>\n<p>The senator also called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to scrutinize commercial banks, advocating for higher taxes from those with substantial annual profits.<\/p>\n<p>He urged President Bola Tinubu\u2019s administration to prioritize governance reforms over tax reforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe North is not, and will never be, a burden to Nigeria.
