{"id":58305,"date":"2024-12-21T18:42:35","date_gmt":"2024-12-21T18:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=58305"},"modified":"2024-12-21T18:42:35","modified_gmt":"2024-12-21T18:42:35","slug":"tinubu-cancels-lagos-events-to-honour-stampede-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/12\/21\/tinubu-cancels-lagos-events-to-honour-stampede-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinubu Cancels Lagos Events to Honour Stampede Victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Patrick Idowu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu has cancelled all official events in Lagos, including his attendance at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta, to honour victims of the recent stampedes in Abuja and Okija, Anambra State, which claimed numerous lives and left many injured.<\/p>\n<p>A statement by the Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga revealed that the President, who was scheduled to watch the Boat Regatta from his Queen\u2019s Drive residence in Ikoyi, called off his appearance after receiving briefings on the tragedies.<\/p>\n<p>Dignitaries, including Lagos State officials and white cap chiefs, were already seated when the cancellation was announced.<\/p>\n<p>Commiserating with the victims, Tinubu urged states and relevant authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures, describing the events at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and a community center in Okija as deeply distressing.<\/p>\n<p>He noted their resemblance to a similar incident in Ibadan, Oyo State.<\/p>\n<p>The President called for accountability from organizations and corporate bodies involved in charitable activities, emphasizing the need to prevent operational lapses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a season of joy, we grieve with fellow citizens mourning the painful losses of their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>Our prayers for comfort and healing are with them,&#8221; Tinubu said, while praying for the repose of the departed and a swift recovery for the injured.<\/p>\n<p>Tinubu also wished the Lagos State government and Regatta organizers a successful and safe festival, themed \u201cOur Water, Our Heritage,Our Life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Patrick Idowu President Bola Tinubu has cancelled all official events in Lagos, including his attendance at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta, to honour victims of the recent stampedes in Abuja and Okija, Anambra State, which claimed numerous lives and left many injured.
