The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to develop home-grown technology to effectively combat the nation\u2019s escalating security challenges.
\nHe warned that continued reliance on foreign technology is hindering the Nigerian Army\u2019s capacity to address critical threats.
\nRepresented by Major General Adeleke Ayannuga, Commander of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, Lt-Gen Oluyede made this call during a one-day seminar in Abuja.
\nOrganized by the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation, the seminar focused on the theme, \u201cLeveraging Home-grown Technological Solutions in Support of Nigerian Army Operations.
\n\u201cNigeria has faced unprecedented security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, urban crimes, and separatist agitations.
\n\u201cThese threats have resulted in devastating loss of lives, displacement of communities, and disruption of economic activities,\u201d he noted.
\nThe COAS stressed that despite significant investments and efforts, the persistence of insecurity calls for a transformative approach.
\n\u201cThe complexity and evolving nature of these threats demand solutions that are adaptive, innovative, and homegrown,\u201d he stated.
\nHe described home-grown technology as more than a tool but a symbol of technological independence and national pride.
\n\u201cBy embracing domestic solutions, we foster a sense of ownership and bolster our nation\u2019s self-reliance in tackling security issues,\u201d he added.
\nLt-Gen Oluyede further noted that relying on foreign technologies limits the Army\u2019s flexibility and strategic potential.
\nHe urged stakeholders to prioritize collaborations and investments in local innovations, which he believes will equip the Nigerian Army with the capacity to address insecurity effectively and independently.
