{"id":57795,"date":"2024-12-09T10:12:40","date_gmt":"2024-12-09T10:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=57795"},"modified":"2024-12-09T10:12:40","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T10:12:40","slug":"edo-governorship-tribunal-commences-amid-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/12\/09\/edo-governorship-tribunal-commences-amid-controversy\/","title":{"rendered":"Edo Governorship Tribunal Commences Amid Controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Jesusemen Oratokhai<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal begins sitting today to address the legal contest surrounding the September 21, 2024, governorship election.<\/p>\n<p>The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, have filed a petition challenging the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC), candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>INEC reported that Okpebholo won with 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who polled 247,274 votes, and the Labour Party\u2019s Olumide Akpata, who garnered 22,763 votes.<\/p>\n<p>However, the PDP and six other political parties claim the election was riddled with irregularities and have called for the result to be overturned.<\/p>\n<p>PDP Caretaker Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, expressed confidence in the party\u2019s legal team and urged the tribunal to ensure a fair hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, APC representative Kingsley Uwadiae-Igbinigie dismissed the allegations, reaffirming the party\u2019s readiness to defend its mandate and accusing the PDP of diminishing credibility in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The tribunal, chaired by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, is set to review seven separate petitions, including those from the Accord Party, Social Democratic Party, and Allied Peoples Movement, all challenging the election&#8217;s outcome.<\/p>\n<p>The PDP is urging the tribunal to declare Ighodalo as the rightful winner, while the proceedings are anticipated to set the stage for a heated legal battle in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jesusemen Oratokhai &nbsp; The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal begins sitting today to address the legal contest surrounding the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
