{"id":57675,"date":"2024-12-04T17:27:42","date_gmt":"2024-12-04T17:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=57675"},"modified":"2024-12-04T17:27:42","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T17:27:42","slug":"reps-to-probe-fct-social-protection-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/12\/04\/reps-to-probe-fct-social-protection-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Reps to Probe FCT Social Protection Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Jesusemen Oratokhai<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the Abuja Rehabilitation Centre in Bwari Area Council and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Administration\u2019s social protection programs.<\/p>\n<p>This decision came after a motion by Mr. Bashiru Dawodu, representing Oshodi-Isolo 1 Federal Constituency, Lagos, who raised concerns over the ineffectiveness of efforts to tackle street begging in the FCT.<\/p>\n<p>Dawodu pointed out that despite the FCT Administration\u2019s October 2024 declaration to eliminate street begging, the problem persists, driven by underlying factors such as disability, poverty, unemployment, and displacement.<\/p>\n<p>He criticized the current approach, which focuses on enforcement and repatriation, as a short-term measure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Federal Capital Territory has only one semi-functional rehabilitation centre in Bwari, which is underfunded and provides substandard services,\u201d Dawodu stated, urging the adoption of effective, long-term interventions such as rehabilitation programs, survival allowances, and resettlement initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the House directed its Committee on Disabilities to investigate the situation and report back within four weeks with recommendations for further legislative action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jesusemen Oratokhai &nbsp; The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the Abuja Rehabilitation Centre in Bwari Area Council and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Administration\u2019s social protection programs.
