The CSOs are urging respective parliaments to refrain from ratifying what they deem a ‘deceptive’ treaty.

Expressing strong reservations, the CSOs emphasize that succumbing to the European Union’s pressure to sign the agreement on Lesbianism, Gay marriage, Bisexual, Transgender, and Bisexual (LGBT) rights on November 15 could have severe consequences. They argue that the pact is primarily designed to promote the homogenization and LGBTization of the participating countries.

The coalition, consisting of the Human & Constitutional Rights Committee, African Bar Association, Parents Watch Initiative, and Zarephath Aid, expressed concern over the deceptive wording of the treaty. Chairman of the Human & Constitutional Rights Committee, African Bar Association, Sonnie Ekwowusi, highlighted that the agreement, taking the form of a treaty, is crafted to impose the EU’s LGBT agenda on ACP countries.

Ekwowusi emphasized the need for ACP countries to unite against signing the agreement, as it could potentially override their constitutions and national sovereignties. He pointed out that Nigeria operates under the Dualist doctrine, stating that, according to Section 12 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), a treaty signed by Nigerian political leaders does not become law until ratified and domesticated by the National Assembly.

Despite the legal framework, Ekwowusi expressed concern that the LGBT agreement is strategically worded to automatically supersede domestic laws once signed by Nigeria and other ACP countries. The lawyer referenced President Joe Biden’s assertion that LGBT rights are universal international law, noting that LGBT practices are illegal in Nigeria and likely in most African countries, except South Africa.

A coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs), including the Human & Constitutional Rights Committee and the African Bar Association, has issued a robust advisory against the Federal Government and heads of Africa-Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) states signing the European Union and Africa-Caribbean and Pacific countries (EU-ACP) Partnership Agreement.
