The Abia State House of Assembly has passed the Abia State Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) Bill 2024, creating a new ministry aimed at boosting economic growth and reducing the state’s dependency on federal allocations.<\/p>\n

Sponsored by Majority Leader Okoro Uchenna Kalu, representing Arochukwu State Constituency, the bill received expedited consideration following a thorough debate among lawmakers.<\/p>\n

The newly established Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) will focus on attracting private sector investment, generating wealth, and strengthening the state’s financial autonomy.<\/p>\n

The law, which takes effect on November 26, 2024, marks a significant step toward economic independence for the state.<\/p>\n

In another development during the plenary session, Egwuronu Ochuru Obasi, representing Ohafia North State Constituency, raised concerns over a medical outreach in Abiriba.<\/p>\n

He reported cases of adverse drug reactions among residents after receiving medications from the donor organization Imo-Hope for the Hopeless, in partnership with the Presbyterian Church.<\/p>\n

Obasi emphasized that the outreach, though well-intentioned, lacked the necessary approval from relevant health authorities.<\/p>\n

The Assembly expressed concern over the incident, calling it a serious oversight.<\/p>\n

It resolved to direct the Ministry of Health to investigate both the source of the drugs and the legitimacy of the donor agency to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.<\/p>\n
