{"id":57250,"date":"2024-11-28T15:37:49","date_gmt":"2024-11-28T15:37:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=57250"},"modified":"2024-11-28T15:37:49","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T15:37:49","slug":"ekiti-first-lady-calls-for-action-against-drugs-gender-based-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/11\/28\/ekiti-first-lady-calls-for-action-against-drugs-gender-based-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Ekiti First Lady Calls for Action Against Drugs, Gender-Based Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Gabriella Ogbu<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ekiti State&#8217;s First Lady, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has called on university students to reject drugs and resist behaviors that fuel gender-based violence (GBV), urging them to actively contribute to the fight against these societal scourges.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Thursday at the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science, and Technology (BOUESTI) in Ikere Ekiti, Oyebanji emphasized that GBV is a \u201cmonster\u201d that stifles the socio-economic progress of a nation.<\/p>\n<p>During her visit, part of the ongoing \u201816 Days of Activism against GBV,\u2019 Oyebanji stressed the urgency of collective action to combat gender violence.<\/p>\n<p>She praised BOUESTI for its robust stance on GBV, noting the institution\u2019s proactive measures in addressing harmful behaviors and promoting equality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no excuse for any form of abuse,&#8221; she declared, urging students to speak out against abuse and refrain from actions that could lead to violence, including drug use. &#8220;Silence and inaction are never acceptable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oyebanji&#8217;s visit is part of a broader campaign to eradicate GBV from society, reflecting the Ekiti State government&#8217;s continued efforts in tackling the issue, which were significantly bolstered in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>BOUESTI Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Adeoluwa, praised Oyebanji\u2019s advocacy, linking the rise in GBV to the increasing use of drugs, especially among young people.<\/p>\n<p>He commended the First Lady&#8217;s timely visit and emphasized the university&#8217;s zero-tolerance policy on GBV.<\/p>\n<p>Also present at the event, Ekiti State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dayo Apata (SAN), and Police Commissioner Adeniran Akinwale, reinforced the need for a unified approach to tackle GBV and ensure strict enforcement of laws protecting gender equality.<\/p>\n<p>The visit marks a significant step in Ekiti State\u2019s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and create lasting change in combating gender violence and promoting a drug-free society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Gabriella Ogbu Ekiti State&#8217;s First Lady, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has called on university students to reject drugs and resist behaviors that fuel gender-based violence (GBV), urging them to actively contribute to the fight against these societal scourges.
