{"id":57137,"date":"2024-11-27T16:46:14","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T16:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=57137"},"modified":"2024-11-27T16:46:14","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T16:46:14","slug":"detention-of-northerners-in-abuja-csos-urge-tinubu-lawmakers-to-intervene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/11\/27\/detention-of-northerners-in-abuja-csos-urge-tinubu-lawmakers-to-intervene\/","title":{"rendered":"Detention of Northerners in Abuja: CSOs Urge Tinubu, Lawmakers to Intervene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Emmanuel Ogbodo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Northern-based Civil Society Organization (CSO), the Astute Civil Society for Cultural and Humanity Development (ACSCHD), has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to intervene in the alleged detention of vulnerable Northerners in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The group claims that beggars, petty traders, and other vulnerable citizens from the North are being arbitrarily detained in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the leadership of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.<\/p>\n<p>In an open letter released in Kaduna on Wednesday, Comrade Ibrahim Ali, Executive Director of ACSCHD, accused authorities of violating the constitutional rights of these individuals.<\/p>\n<p>He stated: \u201cThe Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the right of every citizen to move freely, own property, and associate without discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, under Nyesom Wike&#8217;s watch, these Nigerians are being subjected to various forms of intimidation. This is a clear violation of our constitutional rights,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ali condemned the actions as an abuse of power and a threat to national unity and security.<\/p>\n<p>The group called on Northern leaders, including Senators and Representatives, to publicly condemn the detentions and demand the release of those affected.<\/p>\n<p>They also urged an investigation into the alleged rights violations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clampdown on petty traders, beggars, and vulnerable individuals in the FCT not only infringes on their fundamental rights but also escalates tensions in a region already plagued by security challenges,\u201d Ali added.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized that many of those affected had fled insecurity in their home states and sought refuge and livelihood opportunities in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The letter urged Northern Senators to take decisive action in defense of their constituents:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Northern region, which has long struggled with security issues, does not deserve further harassment from a person in power who should be upholding the rights and dignity of all Nigerians, regardless of their region or background.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CSO warned that the ongoing detentions and mistreatment could heighten tensions and undermine efforts to preserve national unity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Emmanuel Ogbodo A Northern-based Civil Society Organization (CSO), the Astute Civil Society for Cultural and Humanity Development (ACSCHD), has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to intervene in the alleged detention of vulnerable Northerners in Abuja.
