The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has called for the recognition of fundamental civil rights for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to access public spaces in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State.<\/p>\n

The appeal was made by Tosin Aniramu, Programme Assistant at CCD, during a one-day advocacy event titled \u201cGrassroots Awareness on Free Civic Space for PWDs in Ikorodu,\u201d held in Lagos.<\/p>\n

Aniramu highlighted the widespread denial of access to vital public facilities such as banks, hospitals, schools, and religious centers for PWDs in the Ikorodu area.<\/p>\n

This event aligns with CCD\u2019s mission to promote and protect the rights and well-being of PWDs across Nigeria.<\/p>\n

During her presentation on \u201cIntroduction to Disability and Disability Rights,\u201d Aniramu educated attendees on the various aspects of disability, including Disability Clusters, Models of Disability, and Disability Rights.<\/p>\n

She emphasized that PWDs have the right to access civic spaces, not only in Ikorodu but across the nation.<\/p>\n

Citing global statistics, Aniramu noted that around 16 percent of the global population of approximately 1.3 billion people, who live with some form of disability.<\/p>\n

In Nigeria, approximately 29 million people were reported to have disabilities as of 2018.<\/p>\n

She referenced the World Bank\u2019s observation that disability rates in Nigeria are rising due to ongoing conflicts, violence, accidents, and inadequate healthcare services.<\/p>\n

Aniramu further advocated for the Human Rights Model, which she described as the most effective framework for understanding disability.<\/p>\n

This model emphasizes the recognition of the dignity and human, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
