{"id":57084,"date":"2024-11-27T10:27:31","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T10:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=57084"},"modified":"2024-11-27T10:27:31","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T10:27:31","slug":"experts-raise-alarm-on-antimicrobial-resistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/11\/27\/experts-raise-alarm-on-antimicrobial-resistance\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts Raise Alarm on Antimicrobial Resistance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Faith Adama<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Medical experts have sounded the alarm on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), describing it as a &#8220;silent pandemic&#8221; threatening public health, economic stability, and food security worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>At a workshop in Owerri themed \u201cEducate, Advocate, Act Now,\u201d stakeholders emphasized the urgent need for global action to curb this growing crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Chukwuemeka Paschal, the convener, highlighted AMR\u2019s devastating impact, warning, \u201cThis silent pandemic undermines modern medicine, leaving even common infections untreatable.<\/p>\n<p>It threatens healthcare, food security, and environmental sustainability.\u201d He called for unity among stakeholders to &#8220;educate, advocate, and act now to safeguard the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Abujah Racheal, a resource person, painted a grim picture of AMR\u2019s toll, revealing that over 1.27 million deaths annually are directly linked to resistant infections, with 4.95 million deaths associated globally.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria faces a rising tide of drug-resistant malaria, tuberculosis, and bacterial infections, leaving healthcare providers increasingly powerless.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Imagine losing a child to a once-treatable infection or battling untreatable tuberculosis. These aren&#8217;t hypotheticals\u2014they\u2019re today\u2019s reality,\u201d Abujah said.<\/p>\n<p>She blamed public ignorance and the misuse of antibiotics for worsening the crisis, urging Nigerians to abandon self-medication and antibiotic overuse.<\/p>\n<p>Ridwan Yahaya, Antimicrobial Stewardship Manager at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), stressed the role of journalism in tackling AMR.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately 200,000 Nigerian newborns die yearly from AMR complications. Journalists must advocate, educate, and mobilize action to combat this threat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop also explored the role of media in driving behavioral change.
