Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has taken decisive steps to mend relations with the Benin Traditional Council and restore the statutory rights of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.<\/p>\n

These actions reverse contentious policies implemented by the previous administration under Governor Godwin Obaseki, which had strained the relationship between the state government and the revered monarch.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued by the governor\u2019s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the administration announced the abolition of traditional councils created during the Obaseki era and reinstated the financial entitlements of the Benin Traditional Council.<\/p>\n

The Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre, which had been converted into a motor park, will also return to its original purpose as a hub for cultural activities.<\/p>\n

The governor further aligned with the Federal Government\u2019s recognition of the Oba as the rightful custodian of repatriated Benin artefacts.<\/p>\n

He pledged unwavering support for the Benin Royal Museum project, dismissing the controversial Museum of West African Art initiative, which the Benin Traditional Council had opposed.<\/p>\n

Edo State Attorney General, Dr. Samson Osagie, hailed the developments as a significant step toward resolving the protracted disputes between the monarchy and the state government.<\/p>\n

He suggested that ongoing lawsuits filed by the Oba and the Benin Traditional Council against the state might soon be withdrawn, paving the way for mutual cooperation.<\/p>\n

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his respect for traditional institutions, emphasizing his administration\u2019s commitment to preserving the customs and cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are dedicated to fostering harmony and upholding the dignity of our traditional rulers without interference,\u201d the governor stated.<\/p>\n
