Preparations are in full swing for the highly anticipated 19th All Nigeria Editors Conference, scheduled to take place in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. Distinguished figures, including Uncle Sam Amuka, Publisher of Vanguard; Aremo Segun Osoba, former Governor of Ogun State; and Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman\/Editor-in-Chief of THISDAY and Arise News Channel, along with 300 editors, are set to arrive on Tuesday for the annual conference.<\/p>\n
In an official press statement signed by the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Eze Anaba, and the General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, it was revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will declare the conference open. Aremo Osoba and Uncle Amuka will play key roles as Father of the Day and Chairman of the conference, respectively.<\/p>\n
The NGE announced that the conference aims to address pressing economic concerns in Nigeria, delving into monetary and fiscal policy issues, identifying missing gaps, and exploring the role of media executives and editors in resolving these challenges. The event, scheduled from November 14 to 18, 2023, will also witness the launch of the NGE Media Trust Fund under the theme “Stimulating Economic Growth, Technological Advancement: Role of the Media.”<\/p>\n
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, along with several corporate organizations, including Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Nigeria Customs Service (NSC), United Bank for African, Delta State government, Nigerian Port Authority, Zenith Bank, Access Bank, Dangote Group of Company, and others, have expressed support for the conference.<\/p>\n
The NGE expressed excitement about the overwhelming support, viewing it as an endorsement of the conference’s mission to initiate a robust conversation among stakeholders aimed at resolving the nation’s economic challenges.<\/p>\n
The conference will delve into critical issues such as Nigerian media sustainability and the existential threat posed by Big Tech. It aims to remind editors and media executives that accurate, credible, and timely information is crucial for judicious resource allocation.<\/p>\n
Focused discussions are planned on reducing the federal government’s dependence on oil exports, diversifying foreign exchange sources, addressing infrastructure gaps, building strong institutions, and strengthening public financial management systems. Security experts, including the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, will also examine the impact of illegal oil activities threatening the nation’s economy.<\/p>\n
The annual conference provides a unique platform for media executives and editors to engage in discussions about issues affecting the journalism profession and collaboratively propose solutions that enhance its robust practice in Nigeria.
