The Federal Government has intensified efforts to promote the use of low sulphur fuels and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as part of its strategy to combat air pollution and associated health challenges.<\/p>\n
Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, unveiled this initiative while inaugurating the Inter-Agency Committee on Fuels in Abuja.<\/p>\n
The minister highlighted the urgent need for cleaner energy solutions, citing the harmful impact of high sulphur fuels, which are linked to rising cases of asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory ailments.<\/p>\n
“High sulphur fuels contribute significantly to dirty air, extreme weather, and other climate change effects, necessitating collaborative action for cleaner fuels and a healthier environment,” Lawal stated.<\/p>\n
The revised Nigeria Industrial Standards for sulphur concentration\u2014Diesel (300ppm to 500ppm), Petrol (1,500ppm to 150ppm), and Kerosene (1,500ppm to 150ppm)\u2014demonstrate the government\u2019s commitment to reducing pollution.<\/p>\n
The newly inaugurated committee is tasked with creating a pollution monitoring team, developing annual reports with actionable recommendations for the Federal Executive Council, and drafting action plans for achieving Nigeria\u2019s climate and public health goals.<\/p>\n
In her closing remarks, Acting Permanent Secretary Mrs. Bolorunduro B. urged committee members to leverage their expertise to fulfill the national mandate.<\/p>\n
