By following the same households over multiple waves, we can track long-term trends and measure the impact of economic shocks.”

The economic benefits of the survey are substantial. Over the past five years, GHS-Panel findings have contributed to the design of over $8.9 billion worth of projects and interventions in critical sectors such as agriculture, education, water, social protection, and governance.

These initiatives have significantly improved living conditions, particularly by addressing poverty, enhancing access to basic services, and promoting economic empowerment.

The survey’s ability to provide granular, longitudinal data is especially valuable for policymakers.

It not only tracks household income and expenditure patterns but also offers a nuanced understanding of how Nigerians respond to economic challenges, such as inflation, unemployment, and health crises.

This data enables the design of targeted programs that support vulnerable populations and promote sustainable national development.

Looking ahead, the NBS plans to integrate more digital tools into future survey waves, enabling faster and more comprehensive data gathering.

Prince Adeniran assured that these improvements would provide even more disaggregated and accessible information, making the data more useful for a range of stakeholders.

In his closing remarks, Prince Adeniran encouraged policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders to leverage the survey’s findings to drive evidence-based decisions that foster sustainable growth and improve the quality of life for Nigerian communities.

With its wealth of data and long-term focus, the GHS-Panel is set to play a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s future development.

By Faith Adama The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has officially launched the 2023/24 General Household Survey-Panel (GHS-Panel) Wave-5, a critical initiative designed to provide in-depth insights into the economic conditions of Nigerian households.
