{"id":56479,"date":"2024-11-19T14:00:29","date_gmt":"2024-11-19T14:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=56479"},"modified":"2024-11-19T14:00:29","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T14:00:29","slug":"oou-vc-warns-against-japa-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/11\/19\/oou-vc-warns-against-japa-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"OOU VC Warns Against &#8216;Japa&#8217; Syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Jesusemen Oratokhai<\/p>\n<p>The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, has expressed deep concern over the rising trend of mass migration among Nigerian youths, popularly known as the \u201cJapa syndrome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Agboola called on Nigerians to focus on finding homegrown solutions to the country\u2019s challenges, rather than seeking opportunities abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the 29th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Practitioners Association (NASA), hosted by OOU, the VC emphasized the need for collective responsibility in tackling the nation\u2019s issues. Themed \u201cRebuilding Nigeria: Approaches to Effective Governance and Social Transformation,\u201d the event was organized in collaboration with the Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona School of Governance Studies.<\/p>\n<p>In his address, Prof. Agboola warned of the long-term consequences of the youth exodus, predicting that Nigeria could face severe social and economic challenges in the next 20 years if the trend continues unchecked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot rely on foreigners to solve our problems. If they truly cared, they wouldn\u2019t be taking our brightest minds,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s up to us to rebuild this country by leveraging our diversity and creating inclusive and sustainable solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President of NASA, Professor Hauwa\u2019u Evelyn Yusuf, commended OOU for hosting the conference and highlighted the significance of such platforms in fostering academic collaboration, professional growth, and the exchange of ideas.<\/p>\n<p>The conference featured a roundtable discussion on the challenges faced by sociologists in teaching and research.
