Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has demanded the dismissal of Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside other officials at federal, state, and local government levels.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University, Obasanjo criticized the 2023 general election, describing it as a “travesty” and a failure of leadership.<\/p>\n
In a pre-recorded speech titled \u201cLeadership Failure and State Capture in Nigeria\u201d, Obasanjo lambasted INEC for allegedly disregarding technological tools like the BVAS and IReV, which were meant to ensure transparency.<\/p>\n
“INEC willfully failed to implement these technologies, inviting chaos into the electoral process,” he said.<\/p>\n
The former president advocated for shorter tenures and stringent vetting of INEC officials to prevent partisanship and restore public confidence.<\/p>\n
He also emphasized the need for immediate reforms to rebuild trust in Nigeria\u2019s electoral system.<\/p>\n
Obasanjo\u2019s remarks have reignited scrutiny of INEC\u2019s performance in past elections, including allegations of irregularities and partisan appointments.<\/p>\n
