{"id":56229,"date":"2024-11-16T17:24:55","date_gmt":"2024-11-16T17:24:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=56229"},"modified":"2024-11-16T17:24:55","modified_gmt":"2024-11-16T17:24:55","slug":"obasanjo-berates-tinubus-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/11\/16\/obasanjo-berates-tinubus-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Obasanjo Berates Tinubu\u2019s Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has sharply criticized the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, describing the country\u2019s current state under his administration as one of \u201cchaos, insecurity, and disunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a keynote address at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University, Connecticut, Obasanjo emphasized that the problems facing Nigeria are glaringly evident to all who are \u201chonest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Obasanjo, who has been a vocal critic of the current administration, did not hold back in his assessment of Tinubu\u2019s leadership, referring to him by the derogatory monikers \u201cBaba-go-slow\u201d and \u201cEmilokan\u201d\u2014terms often used by critics to highlight Tinubu\u2019s perceived lack of urgency and entitlement to the presidency<\/p>\n<p>According to the former president, the nation is sinking deeper into a state of dysfunction as a result of pervasive corruption and poor governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more the immorality and corruption of a nation, the more the nation sinks into chaos, insecurity, conflict, discord, division, disunity, depression, youth restiveness, confusion, violence, and underdevelopment,\u201d Obasanjo stated. \u201cThat\u2019s the situation mostly in Nigeria in the reign of Baba-go-slow and Emilokan. The failing state status of Nigeria is confirmed and glaringly indicated for every honest person to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on Nigeria\u2019s long-standing leadership crisis, Obasanjo referenced Chinua Achebe\u2019s 1983 treatise The Trouble with Nigeria, where Achebe attributed the nation\u2019s challenges to a failure of leadership. Obasanjo echoed this sentiment, saying, \u201cThe trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership. There is nothing wrong with the Nigerian character. There is nothing wrong with the Nigerian land or climate or water or air or anything else. The Nigerian problem is the unwillingness or inability of its leaders to rise to the responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Obasanjo also highlighted the issue of state capture\u2014where political elites use corruption to control national resources and policies for personal gain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is happening in Nigeria\u2014right before our eyes\u2014is state capture,\u201d Obasanjo said. \u201cThe purchase of national assets by political elites and their families at bargain prices, the allocation of national resources\u2014minerals, land, and even human resources\u2014to specific actors at the expense of the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former president warned that state capture not only damages Nigeria\u2019s economic development but also undermines public services, education, healthcare, and even the environment.
