The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), has urged electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria to prioritize consumer rights, particularly in the areas of metering and billing.<\/p>\n
During a key meeting on Tuesday in Abuja with stakeholders from Nigeria’s electricity sector, FCCPC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Tunji Bello, highlighted ongoing consumer concerns and inefficiencies within the sector.<\/p>\n
Bello stressed that arbitrary billing practices and a lack of transparency in metering continue to be significant issues. “The recent challenges, especially the arbitrary billing practices and the lack of transparency in metering, are unacceptable,” he stated. “We must ensure that consumers are treated fairly and that all practices adhere to the guidelines set out by regulatory bodies like the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission.”<\/p>\n
Among the issues raised was the phase-out of the Unistar prepaid meter model, which has sparked complaints from consumers who fear additional financial burdens.<\/p>\n
One distressed Ikeja Electric customer appealed to the FCCPC, stating, “To change the meters in my house will cost about N1 million. Please kindly intervene.”<\/p>\n
In response, Bello emphasized that the cost of replacing obsolete meters should not fall on consumers.
