Civil servants in Abuja are leaving their personal vehicles parked, opting instead for public transport as skyrocketing fuel prices make driving increasingly unaffordable, according to a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) survey.<\/p>\n
Some government employees shared their struggles with NAN on Sunday, explaining that public transport is now a necessity rather than a choice due to the relentless fuel price hike.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Elizabeth Ekwere, a civil servant (name changed for privacy), said she now relies on public transport and has even cut down her workdays to avoid debt. \u201cEvery week I drive my car to work, I spend nearly N100,000 on fuel. I had to stop,\u201d she revealed, adding that she goes to work only twice a week with her supervisor’s approval.<\/p>\n
Mr. Festus Ugwu, who once drove daily, now limits his car use to Sundays for family church trips. Despite concerns over \u2018one chance\u2019 scams in public transit, he said he has little choice but to cut costs. “Driving is a luxury now; you have to calculate every trip,” he said, urging the government to address the cost of living.<\/p>\n
Other civil servants, like Caroline Ade, believe a reliable train system or government-owned buses could provide relief. Meanwhile, Mr. Emeka Eluagu hopes the government\u2019s CNG initiative will offer a viable alternative if implemented safely.<\/p>\n
As fuel prices reach as high as N1,400 per litre, Aisha Mahmoud advised the government to deploy affordable public transport options to ease the financial burden on workers and reduce safety risks in the FCT.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
