Governor Mohammed Umar Bago made the announcement on Tuesday after a meeting with leaders of the organised labour at Government House, Minna.

Bago confirmed that the payment of the new wage structure will begin in November, following the completion of October salaries. He explained that the decision came after extensive discussions between the government and labour representatives.

“We have decided to approve N80,000 as the minimum wage for both state and local governments. This amount is sustainable, and with improvements in agriculture, we hope to increase it soon,” the governor stated.

In addition to the new wage, Bago revealed the government’s plans to establish civil service farms, encouraging workers to engage in agricultural production to enhance productivity. “We are setting up civil service farms so our workers can be more productive. If all goes well, the minimum wage could rise to one million naira in the future,” he added.

The new wage structure will take effect from November, as October payments have already been processed.

However, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Abdulkarim Idris Lafene, expressed reservations about the adequacy of the N80,000 wage in light of the current economic situation. “While we appreciate the effort, N80,000 is not enough considering the high cost of living. We hope the governor’s vision for a one-million-naira minimum wage becomes a reality soon,” Lafene said.

This development follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signing of a new national minimum wage law on July 29, 2024, after consultations with the NLC and Trade Union Congress.

The Niger State Government has approved a new minimum wage of N80,000 for civil servants at both the state and local government levels.
