The Anambra State Government has committed to find the culprits of the cult-related killings that took place on Sunday in the Nibo community of the state’s Awka South LGA.<\/p>\n
The massacres, which claimed the lives of 13 people, took place when some hoodlums suspected of being cultists stormed an arena near the location for the community’s New Yam festival, known as the ‘Nibo onwa asaa’ festival.<\/p>\n
The hoodlums were claimed to have emerged from a Lexus 300 jeep and opened fire on people enjoying fun at the arena at the Oye Nwochichi Market beside Nibo Old Maternity, killing eight people instantaneously before moving on to another place where more injuries were reported.<\/p>\n
In a press statement on Monday, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, responded to the news, stating the state government<\/p>\n
The statement said, \u201cThe Anambra State Government is aware of the deaths that resulted from alleged cult-related killings that occurred in Nibo, Awka South LG, on Sunday, October 20, 2024.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is just another instance of the kind of violent crimes linked to cults that have occurred recently, and the state government is determined to put an end to it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government sympathises with the families of the deceased and assures them that the government will get to the root of the incident and bring the perpetrators to book.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo this end, the government appeals to members of the public to avail it of any useful information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators, while assuring them of confidentiality and a handsome reward.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mefor urged law-abiding inhabitants to go about their business without fear as the state government worked with security authorities to deal with the event.<\/p>\n
