However, it emphasized that electricity in Nigeria remains cheaper compared to some neighboring countries.

This explanation comes amid growing frustration over increased tariffs, following the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) announcement on April 3, 2024, of an upward review for customers under Band A, who receive an average of 20 hours of power supply daily. The new tariff raised the cost from N66 to N225 per kilowatt-hour.

Sule Abdulaziz, the Managing Director of TCN, addressed the issue during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program, noting that the higher charges reflect the complexity of producing electricity. “Nigerians are paying more because producing electricity is not easy,” Abdulaziz said.

He added that customers receiving 20 to 22 hours of daily power supply fall under the Band A classification. “It’s not everybody, but those people on Band A get 20 to 22 hours,” he noted, explaining that consistent supply comes with increased operational costs.

Abdulaziz also cited Nigeria’s currency exchange challenges as a factor contributing to rising electricity costs. However, he stressed that, despite the hike, Nigerians still benefit from relatively affordable electricity. “If you go to other African countries—Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal—electricity in Nigeria is still cheaper,” he stated.

The increased tariff has sparked public concern about the affordability of power in the face of economic hardship. Nonetheless, the TCN argues that the revised prices are essential to sustaining the electricity sector amidst ongoing production challenges.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has stated that Nigerians are paying higher electricity tariffs due to the challenges involved in generating power.
