At a time of strife, you stood for peace. At a time of division, you stood for unity,” Obi wrote. He further described Gowon’s life as one of “sacrifice, leadership, and unity.”

He added, “Your steadfast commitment to preserving the peace and sovereignty of Nigeria during a challenging period in our history will forever be remembered and revered. Your exemplary leadership and statesmanship remain an inspiration to younger and many generations of Nigerians.”

However, Obi’s tribute sparked widespread criticism on social media, particularly on X, where many Nigerians questioned the appropriateness of praising Gowon, considering his role during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). Some users criticized Obi for celebrating a figure whom they held responsible for actions taken during the war, which resulted in significant loss of life and lasting regional tensions, particularly in the southeastern region of the country, where Obi hails from.

Responding to the backlash in a follow-up post on Sunday, Obi defended his message. He emphasized that true heroism lies in forgiveness and moving beyond past conflicts to embrace unity and reconciliation.

He wrote, “Indisputably, the darkest part of our 64-year journey as a nation is the 30 months of civil war from 1967 to 1970, and God Almighty, whose way is not our way, must have a reason why He kept the Chief Prosecutor of the war, General Gowon, alive to be 90 years today. And the man who saw the end of the war, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is still here at 87, superheading all moves to see a reconciled and just Nigeria.”

Obi further pointed to the symbolic nature of Nigeria’s history of reconciliation, referencing the national burial given to the Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, in 2012. “There was also a developing new spirit when Nigeria gave the Biafra leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a heroic national burial on March 2, 2012, coincidentally under my tenure as Governor of Anambra State. The status of the burial given to Dim Ojukwu remains the boldest indication to the world that Nigeria, as a country, is disposed to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation,” he said.

Obi’s defense has done little to quell the divided opinions. Some supporters argue that his message reflects a mature and statesmanlike approach to national healing, necessary for moving Nigeria forward. They commend him for acknowledging the need for forgiveness and reconciliation in a nation still grappling with the scars of the civil war and regional disparities.

However, critics continue to highlight the complexities of Nigeria’s history, especially the events of the war and its aftermath. For many, Gowon remains a controversial figure, and any praise directed toward him can be seen as disregarding the pain of those who suffered during the conflict. They argue that Obi’s message, while well-intentioned, oversimplifies the deeper wounds that remain unhealed in Nigeria’s national psyche.

The debate surrounding Obi’s message has once again brought to the fore the delicate issue of Nigeria’s post-war reconciliation efforts and the divergent narratives surrounding the country’s historical figures. While some advocate for collective healing through forgiveness, others believe there is a need for greater acknowledgment of past grievances before true reconciliation can be achieved.

Mixed reactions have continued to trail Peter Obi’s birthday message to Yakubu Gowon, the former military head of state, following his 90th birthday.
