The event, which is taking place at the Boston Convention Center from October 19 to 22, 2024, was officially opened by IACP President John Letteney, alongside other top officials of the association.

In a statement signed by Force spokesperson, Ademuyiwa Adejobi, the conference, which attracts over 16,000 participants from around the world, provides an opportunity for law enforcement professionals to enhance their skills through training and courses in various aspects of policing. Key areas of focus include forensic investigations, communication, public safety, community-based policing, crisis response, election security, and psychological autopsy, among others.

The Nigeria Police Force has consistently leveraged international conferences like this one, as well as other global forums such as those organized by INTERPOL, to improve the capabilities and policing strategies of its personnel. These engagements have proven critical in refining the proficiency of NPF officers and aligning their practices with global standards.

During the conference, the Nigerian delegation was addressed by Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Abiodun Sylvester Alabi, who spoke on behalf of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. DIG Alabi encouraged the attending officers to serve as exemplary ambassadors of the NPF throughout the event. Other senior NPF members at the conference included Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Jonathan Towuru, AIG Yekini Ayoku, and Commissioner of Police (CP) Henry Uche of the Nigeria Police Force-Nigerian Communications Commission Centre (NPF-NCCC). Former IGP Ogbonaya Onovo also attended the event, underscoring the significance of Nigerian participation.

The NPF’s strong presence at the IACP conference reflects its status as having the largest African membership in the association. Among the IACP’s 34,000 members from 174 countries, the Nigeria Police Force boasts the highest number of officers from Africa, reinforcing its commitment to engaging with global law enforcement bodies to foster improved professional policing back home.

As the conference progresses, Nigerian officers are expected to network with international counterparts, gain insights from global best practices, and bring back knowledge that will contribute to more effective law enforcement in Nigeria. These learnings will be pivotal in addressing the country’s diverse security challenges, including community policing, crisis response, and the evolving nature of crime.

The NPF’s participation in such international forums reaffirms its dedication to strengthening its officers’ professional development, improving public safety, and implementing innovative policing strategies to better serve the Nigerian people.

A high-level delegation from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other Nigerian law enforcement agencies has arrived in Boston, USA, to participate in the 2024 annual conference and exhibition of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
