The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has despatched operatives to monitor the governorship elections slated for Saturday in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states in an effort to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. This strategic deployment intends to increase transparency and prevent electoral fraud in the future elections.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, the spokesperson for the commission, conveyed this information in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja. According to Ogugua, the ICPC operatives are strategically positioned across the 56 local government areas and 649 wards in the three states where the elections are slated to take place.<\/p>\n
The primary objective of the ICPC operatives is to monitor and deter various electoral malpractices, with a specific focus on preventing vote-buying during the voting process. Ogugua highlighted that this monitoring initiative is in response to an invitation from the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who sought the collaboration of the ICPC in ensuring that the electoral processes in these states remain free and fair.<\/p>\n
Mr. Alex Chukwura, the Head of Special Duties Division (SDD) at ICPC, emphasized the importance of collaboration with other security agencies during the monitoring exercise. Before the operatives’ deployment, Chukwura urged them to work closely with the military, police, Department of State Security, and other relevant bodies to guarantee the elections’ fairness and security.<\/p>\n
Chukwura instructed the operatives to adhere strictly to the ICPC guidelines for monitoring elections, emphasizing discipline, integrity, and teamwork. He urged them to take decisive actions against anyone involved in corrupt practices during the elections, regardless of their social status, in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n
