Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council have removed their Chairman, Comrade Patrick Osadebamwen, from office. This decision followed a chaotic Congress held on Saturday, October 19, to establish a credentials committee tasked with overseeing the upcoming election of Council officials scheduled for December.<\/p>\n
The Congress, which initially began smoothly, was abruptly disrupted when accusations of bias were levelled against Osadebamwen. Delegates at the Congress alleged that the chairman had violated key provisions of the NUJ Constitution during the nomination process for the committee members. This led to heated exchanges among members, with factions forming in opposition to Osadebamwen\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n
The tipping point came when a motion for Osadebamwen\u2019s impeachment was raised. According to sources, a substantial number of signatures were gathered in support of the impeachment notice, effectively sealing his fate. At the time of filing this report, the impeachment had been formally executed, and both Osadebamwen and his executive committee were removed from office.<\/p>\n
It was further gathered that the State Executive Council (SEC), composed of chairmen of all the various NUJ Chapels in the FCT Council, has assumed control of the Council\u2019s operations in the interim. The SEC will now oversee the day-to-day affairs of the union and ensure that the upcoming election proceeds smoothly, according to union insiders.<\/p>\n
In the wake of this internal turmoil, some senior members of the NUJ FCT Council, led by Elder Timothy Oloruntoba Elerewe, a former Chairman of the FCT Correspondents Chapel, and Iyobosa Uwugiaren, Secretary of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, attempted to mediate and restore order.
