The disruptions, according to the Commission, are undoing recent progress in reducing infrastructure deficits and stabilizing the national power grid.

In a statement released on Saturday, NERC explained that the latest grid disturbance, which occurred in the morning hours, was caused by an explosion at a current transformer located at the Jebba transmission station. The incident, which occurred at 8:15 am, triggered a cascade of shutdowns at multiple power plants due to the loss of load on the system.

However, efforts to restore power have progressed rapidly. By 1:00 pm, NERC reported that electricity had been restored in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

As part of the measures to prevent future disruptions, NERC highlighted that the ongoing unbundling of the System Operator (SO) function from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is expected to enhance grid management. The move, facilitated under the Electricity Act 2023, aims to establish an independent System Operator, which would foster more discipline in grid operations and attract optimized investments in infrastructure.

In its pursuit of a long-term solution to the recurring grid issues, NERC announced plans to conduct an investigative public hearing. The hearing will seek to identify both immediate and underlying causes of the disturbances and the widespread outages.

The Commission stated that the date and venue for the hearing will soon be published in national newspapers, encouraging all stakeholders to participate actively in the process.

The recent outages underscore the need for lasting improvements in grid management to meet the nation’s growing energy demands.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has raised concerns over the increasing frequency of grid disturbances, which have resulted in widespread outages across multiple states.
