This initiative aims to enhance the overall safety and structure of the city, ensuring a more resilient and prosperous capital.

The committee was inaugurated by Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC). According to Obuah, the primary focus of the committee will be to provide accurate records of all development permits issued across the FCT. This step is expected to significantly reduce instances of unapproved developments, illegal conversions of land use, and the widespread problem of land grabbing.

One of the key aspects of the committee’s work will be its role in ensuring proper data collection on the city’s consumption of utilities and services, such as water, electricity, and sewerage systems. By closely monitoring these systems, the committee will be able to identify illegal connections, which often go undetected and result in lost revenue for the government. This measure will not only safeguard the city’s infrastructure but also streamline service delivery to residents.

In addition to improving utility management, the committee’s work will bolster revenue generation by bringing all properties and buildings in the FCT under the internal revenue tax net. This effort is projected to generate billions of Naira for the FCT Administration, boosting the city’s fiscal sustainability. The comprehensive database to be created will also support research and provide valuable insights into city planning, development, and management—areas in which Abuja is already considered a success story.

The Post Development Audit Committee will also serve a critical role in shaping the future of Abuja’s development. By analyzing current trends in the city’s growth, it will propose a more robust and forward-looking development strategy. This aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, which seeks to modernize infrastructure and build resilient, people-centered cities across the country.

Chief Obuah emphasized the wide-reaching benefits of the committee’s work, noting that it will also create employment opportunities by engaging consultants and experts in various fields. These professionals will provide the technical expertise necessary to ensure that the city’s development follows global best practices in sustainable urban planning.

“This committee is critical to the sustainable development of our dear city, and it is our collective duty to ensure its success,” Obuah said. “On our part, the FCT Minister is committed to providing the necessary logistics to see that this exercise is completed successfully.”

In an effort to tackle the persistent issue of building collapses and promote sustainable urban development, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has approved the formation of a Ministerial Committee on Post Development Audit of Buildings in Abuja.
