The African Union (AU) has recognized Nigeria’s vast potential to dominate Africa’s blue economy, lauds \u00a0its strategic location and rich marine resources. Georges Asseko, Head of Division, Blue Economy at the AU, emphasized Nigeria’s advantages at the national stakeholders’ consultation and validation workshop for the country’s blue economy strategy in Abuja.<\/p>\n
Asseko highlighted Nigeria’s rapid development of aquaculture value chains, making it the continent’s second-largest producer of aquacultural products. The AU Commission acknowledges Nigeria’s dedication to harnessing its marine resources through its standalone Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, aligned with the Africa Blue Economy Strategy (ABES).<\/p>\n
The AU’s Agenda 2063 envisions a prosperous, peaceful Africa driven by its resources. The blue economy plays a crucial role in fostering inclusive economic growth, ensuring food security, creating jobs and wealth, protecting ecosystems and promoting regional integration.<\/p>\n
Asseko urged Nigeria’s marine stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector actors and local communities, to collaborate and contribute to the strategy’s success. Minister of Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for innovative strategies, collaboration and sustainability.<\/p>\n
Nigeria’s National Blue Economy Strategy aims to enhance economic growth while protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. The strategy provides a roadmap for sustainable development, leveraging research, collaboration and public-private partnerships.
