{"id":52636,"date":"2024-10-18T09:14:24","date_gmt":"2024-10-18T09:14:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=52636"},"modified":"2024-10-18T09:14:24","modified_gmt":"2024-10-18T09:14:24","slug":"igp-orders-recovery-of-612-stolen-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/10\/18\/igp-orders-recovery-of-612-stolen-cars\/","title":{"rendered":"IGP Orders Recovery of 612 Stolen Cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate investigation and recovery of a second batch of 612 vehicles reported stolen on the Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) platform.<\/p>\n<p>He also ordered a probe into approximately 1,610 vehicles with inconsistent registration information on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>The e-CMR is a cutting-edge, real-time online repository of motor vehicle data intended to aid police investigations, operational actions, and combat vehicle-related crimes such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. The police introduced it in July 2024.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement issued by the Force Headquarters on Friday, one of the automobiles taken in Abuja was recovered after the buyer sought for a CMR certificate, which triggered an alarm that identified the vehicle as stolen.<\/p>\n<p>Following inquiries, the police discovered that the vehicle had been re-registered twice in an attempt to disguise its stolen status.<br \/>\nThe police also reported that a member of the auto theft syndicate had been detained and would be charged shortly.<\/p>\n<p>The statement partly read: \u201cTwo weeks ago, the IGP directed an immediate investigation to recover a second batch of 612 vehicles reported\/flagged as stolen on the e-CMR platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the same vein, 1,610 vehicles with conflicting information have been referred for investigation<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first batch of seven vehicles reported\/flagged as stolen on the e-CMR platform were referred for investigation, out of which three have been detected\/recovered. The one stolen from Abuja was recovered in Ilorin, Kwara State, and brought back to Abuja over the weekend to be handed back to the rightful owner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe owner had reported the vehicle as stolen on the Stolen Vehicle Portal and provided the details of the vehicle. The innocent buyer applied to obtain the CMR certificate, but the system triggered an alert that the vehicle had been reported\/flagged as stolen. This prompted a police investigation that led to the recovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is interesting to observe that the stolen vehicle was re-registered twice after it was stolen by the criminals.
