The initiative, announced on Thursday in Abuja, is part of the Highway Development and Management Initiative (HDMI), designed to create a sustainable and efficient transportation network.

Senator Umahi explained that the cashless toll system aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader strategy for advancing infrastructure under the Renewed Hope agenda. He highlighted that this development will not only streamline toll collection but also ensure better road maintenance and user experience.

The Keffi-Akwanga-Makurdi road project was executed through an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction plus Financing (EPC+F) model. Senator Umahi noted that China Exim Bank funded 85% of the project, with the Federal Government covering the remaining 15%. The contractor, China Harbour Ltd, will operate the toll system to recover the project’s costs.

The newly inaugurated committee will focus on creating a comprehensive framework for the cashless tolling system. Some key deliverables include:

Developing a cashless tolling framework to promote smooth and efficient toll collection.

Evaluating potential relief stations along the corridor to enhance road user experience with facilities such as supermarkets, clinics, security stations, and parks.

Installing security infrastructure, including CCTV cameras and solar-powered lighting across the highway to ensure swift response to emergencies.

Ensuring 10-minute response time for incidents through strategically located security personnel along the route.

Senator Umahi emphasized the importance of relief stations, which he likened to those found on expressways abroad. These stations will offer essential services, including towing facilities, lorry parks, and surveillance posts. The minister also highlighted that this project aims to ensure road users’ safety, reduce delays, and modernize Nigeria’s highway infrastructure.

Senator Umahi commended President Tinubu’s commitment to economic recovery through strategic infrastructure projects, emphasizing that the cashless tolling system would enhance road maintenance, reduce revenue leakage, and improve service delivery for commuters.

The Abuja-Keffi and Keffi-Makurdi corridors are expected to set a new standard for highway management in Nigeria, with improved convenience, safety, and efficiency through cashless toll collection.

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has inaugurated a committee to oversee the adoption of a cashless tolling system for the Abuja-Keffi Expressway and the dualization of the Keffi-Akwanga-Makurdi road.
