The Federal Government has pledged to fully repair and desilt the Alau Dam in Maiduguri, Borno State, after its collapse led to devastating flooding that claimed many lives and displaced over a million people. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, gave this assurance during an assessment visit to the dam, emphasizing that the government is committed to completing the repairs before the next rainy season.<\/p>\n
The dam’s collapse on September 10th resulted in catastrophic flooding, destroying critical infrastructure and farmlands worth billions of naira. The Inter-Ministerial Technical Committee, formed in response to the disaster, will evaluate the dam’s physical condition and social and environmental impacts on local communities.<\/p>\n
The committee’s assessment focuses on the site of the collapsed dyke, which caused flooding in Maiduguri and surrounding areas. President Bola Tinubu approved the committee’s formation, comprising members from various ministries, including Works, Housing, Environment, Budget, and Finance.<\/p>\n
Malam Aliyu Dala, Director of Dams and Reservoirs, highlighted the need to explore options for raising the reservoir, the primary source of drinking water and irrigation for Maiduguri, Jere, Mafa, and other local government areas. The government’s efforts extend beyond the Alau Dam to other dams in the region, including Kiri and Dadin Kowa dams.<\/p>\n
Borno State Chairman of the Technical Sub-Committee on Development around Alau Dam, Alhaji Mohammed Sanda, attributed the recent flooding to heavy rainfall, blocked river access, and water diversion into Lake Alau.
