The gruesome find has heightened tensions in the area, which has experienced a series of violent incidents in recent months.

Jerry Alkali, the councillor representing Igu Ward, confirmed the discovery and expressed the community’s growing concerns. “The corpses were still lying in the area as of Tuesday,” Alkali reported, adding that local authorities had been informed of the situation. Despite the alert, no official explanation has been given by law enforcement or security agencies regarding the circumstances leading to the deaths.

While the cause of the deaths remains unclear, some residents have speculated that the deceased were not from the Tokulo community. An anonymous local resident suggested that the victims may have been hired or brought into the area before being killed by security forces. “None of the victims are from this community. It seems like they were shot by security personnel, but we are not sure about the details,” the resident disclosed.

Tokulo, the hometown of the current chairman of the Bwari Area Council, has been no stranger to violence. The area has suffered multiple attacks by bandits in recent years, with devastating consequences for both locals and security officers. These incidents have fueled an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, as residents remain unsure about the safety of their community and the effectiveness of security efforts to curb bandit activities.

Tuesday’s discovery bears an unsettling resemblance to a previous incident in the nearby Kawu community, also located within the Bwari Area Council. In September, five bodies, also suspected to be bandits, were found in the area. At that time, authorities remained tight-lipped, and the situation was never fully explained, leaving many residents in fear of what might happen next.

As of the time of this report, the FCT Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the discovery in Tokulo. The silence from the authorities has only added to the apprehension of the residents, who are eager for answers and reassurances about their safety.

The repeated bandit-related incidents in Bwari Area Council have raised serious concerns about the broader security situation in the Federal Capital Territory. Despite its proximity to Abuja, Nigeria’s seat of power, the area has witnessed an increase in criminal activities, including banditry and kidnappings. Local leaders have continuously called for a more robust security presence to protect lives and property.

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s discovery, community leaders and residents are urging the government and security agencies to intensify their efforts in addressing the escalating insecurity in Bwari. Some residents are even contemplating relocating to safer areas, fearing that the continued presence of bandits may lead to more violent confrontations with security forces.

“We are living in constant fear. These bandits come into our communities and terrorize us, and we don’t feel protected,” one resident lamented. “The government needs to do something fast before more lives are lost.”

Residents of Tokulo community in Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are reeling in fear after the discovery of 12 bodies believed to be those of bandits early Tuesday morning.
