Following recent changes to the state’s electoral code, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has declared that the state’s local government elections will take place shortly.<\/p>\n

The governor revealed this on Monday at a state Executive Council meeting, stressing the significance of holding local democratic elections in accordance with the recent Supreme Court decision.<\/p>\n

A significant step in his administration’s preparations for the impending local council elections was taken when Lawal also appointed Bala Aliyu Gusau as the Chairman of the Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission during the Council meeting.<\/p>\n

The government house in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, served as the venue for the gathering.<\/p>\n

Sulaiman Idris, the governor’s spokeswoman, said in a statement that the existing leadership, which consists of the 14 single administrators, will leave office on October 23, 2024.<\/p>\n

In reference to the upcoming local government elections, Lawal pointed out that he had recently signed modifications to the Zamfara State Electoral Law.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cBased on the Supreme Court\u2019s recent judgment, we need to conduct elections in our local government councils.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the signing of the amended law, the State Independent Elections Commission will announce the election timetable as soon as possible so that we will have democratically elected local government councils in Zamfara State.\u201d<\/div>\n

He further instructed, \u201cThe Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission is to come up with guidelines and modalities for the elections, and it is expected that we all will give the necessary support and cooperation towards the success of the exercise.\u201d<\/div>\n

The statement added that Lawal told members of the Executive Council about his recent involvement in the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting, calling it a worthwhile experience.<\/p>\n

He conveyed hope that it would have a favorable effect on his administration’s continuous endeavors to enhance the quality of life for Zamfara residents.<\/p>\n

Lawal also instructed the Secretary to the State Government to work with the Deputy Governor to quickly establish the Zamfara State Investment Promotion Agency Board in order to guarantee its efficient operation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Governor also informed the council that the state is ready to commence the cash transfer component of NG-Cares, a program aimed at supporting vulnerable individuals in the state,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

The Governor explained, \u201cThe transfers will support the vulnerable poor, unemployed youth, and women across the 14 Local Government Areas of the state. A total of about N4.9 billion will be expended on the project.\u201d<\/p>\n

He provided further details, saying, \u201cThe beneficiaries will include 5,000 poor and vulnerable households; Labour Intensive Public Workfare (LIPW) for 6,000 unemployed youths and women; and Livelihood Support Grants (LG) for 8,000 economically active youths and women.\u201d<\/p>\n
