In Nigeria, a nation rich in natural gas reserves, CNG has emerged as a viable option across multiple sectors, particularly in transportation and power generation. In response to the urgent need for energy diversification and sustainability, the Nigerian government has initiated policies to promote the adoption of CNG, recognizing its potential to alleviate pressing energy challenges.

As one of Africa’s largest oil producers, Nigeria relies heavily on oil, which constitutes a substantial portion of its GDP and export revenues. However, the country continues to face persistent energy crises, characterized by power shortages, inefficient fuel distribution, and an overreliance on oil. With over 70 million Nigerians lacking access to electricity, the need for alternative energy sources has never been more pressing.

CNG presents a promising solution, offering cleaner combustion, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and cost-effective energy for transportation and power generation. By adopting CNG, Nigeria could alleviate the energy burden on households and industries, simultaneously supporting its commitment to environmental sustainability. Furthermore, CNG’s benefits include lower operating costs for vehicles, improved air quality, and a significant reduction in reliance on imported fuels.

However, the initiative to promote CNG adoption has faced criticism from various quarters, leading to an important question: Are powerful oil interests undermining the government’s efforts to transition to CNG? Recent developments, particularly the back-and-forth between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Dangote Refinery, illuminate the competitive landscape of Nigeria’s energy sector. The Dangote Refinery, one of the largest in Africa, has firmly positioned itself as a key player in Nigeria’s oil market. Concerns arise about the refinery’s long-term viability as the government promotes CNG as a cleaner alternative fuel source for transportation.

Statements from both the NNPC and Dangote Refinery highlight their diverging interests. The NNPC has been vocal about CNG’s potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s energy sector, framing it as a cornerstone of the country’s energy transition. In contrast, management at Dangote Refinery has emphasized its commitment to oil refining and expressed skepticism about the feasibility of a rapid transition to CNG, raising concerns over the necessary infrastructure and consumer readiness.

This clash of narratives reflects broader tensions between traditional oil interests and emerging energy alternatives. While the NNPC advocates for a diversified energy portfolio, the Dangote Refinery maintains that oil will remain a dominant force in Nigeria’s economy for the foreseeable future.

Public sentiment regarding the CNG program has also turned critical, with social media platforms abuzz with negative comments. A notable post on X (formerly Twitter) by user King Durotimi Dawodu warned, “If you love your life, stay away from CNG! These people want you dead and gone! Imagine kids being in the car when this explosion happens.” Such statements appear to be part of a coordinated effort to undermine the government’s push for CNG, raising questions about safety and public perception.

While concerns regarding the safety of CNG vehicles are valid, they should not overshadow the many benefits of this alternative fuel, especially in light of current economic challenges. Any fuel, including traditional gasoline and diesel, can pose safety risks if not handled properly. Fuels inherently contain substantial amounts of energy that can be released explosively when ignited.

Nonetheless, CNG can be used safely when its unique properties are understood, and proper handling protocols are followed. Engineer Michael Oluwagbemi, the Programme Director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), has reiterated the organization’s commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of CNG vehicles in Nigeria. In a statement on X, Oluwagbemi emphasized, “We see that some naysayers are late to the party on the safety measures the @PCNGInitiative is taking to secure the emerging CNG industry. We are one step ahead to ensure the safety & reliability of CNG vehicles in Nigeria despite the intrinsic safety of CNG relative to petrol.”

Importantly, natural gas has a limited flammability range, igniting only at specific concentrations. It does not burn below approximately 5% or above 15% when mixed with air, making it comparatively safer than gasoline and diesel, which can ignite at lower concentrations and temperatures. Moreover, CNG fueling stations operate at around 3,000 psi (pounds per square inch), a high storage pressure that may seem alarming. However, it is essential to recognize that fueling with natural gas adheres to strict safety standards mandated by both industry and government. High-pressure gases are routinely handled safely in various industrial and medical contexts.

Natural gas-powered vehicles are engineered to meet stringent safety standards during regular operation and in case of accidents. They undergo the same federal crash tests as gasoline and diesel vehicles. Additionally, the tanks used for CNG storage are constructed with thicker and more robust materials than those used for traditional fuels, designed to endure environmental stressors with a lifespan of 15 to 25 years, including mandatory periodic inspections.

Driving a CNG vehicle does not entail a higher risk compared to conventional gasoline or diesel vehicles. While responsible fuel handling remains essential, there is no need to fear CNG as a viable alternative.

As Nigeria grapples with economic difficulties, the potential of CNG emerges as a timely solution to reduce fuel costs and environmental impact. Despite skepticism and pushback from some quarters, the advantages of CNG cannot be overlooked. With the implementation of proper safety measures and continued government support, the transition to CNG could pave the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future, lessening the stranglehold of oil interests on Nigeria’s economy. The government’s push for CNG adoption not only represents a crucial step toward energy diversification but also aligns with the global movement toward sustainable energy solutions, potentially transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape for generations to come.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is increasingly recognized as a cleaner fuel alternative to traditional gasoline and diesel, significantly reducing carbon emissions and contributing to environmental sustainability.
